Action Alert

February 20, 2007

Call your Senator today!

Congratulations Arizona activists! Your state is the first to get an anti-NAIS bill out of committee. At the hearing on February 14, SB 1428 was approved by the Senate Natural Resources and Rural Affairs Committee by a vote of 6-1!

Background: The Arizona Department of Agriculture currently has authority to implement NAIS, under section 3-1207 of the Arizona Revised Statutes. The original version of SB 1428 would have amended the existing statute to stop the NAIS completely. Before being approved by the Committee, SB 1428 was amended so that the agency cannot "mandate" or "force participation" in NAIS.

Next steps: Senator Johnson will be introducing a non-discrimination amendment on the floor, to prevent coercive measures from being used to force people into NAIS. This amendment is critical to preventing the Department of Agriculture from abusing a voluntary program.

You can find out more about the bill at

SB 1428 is expected to come to the floor of the Senate for a vote this week. Please call your Senator NOW. Ask him or her to:

Below are some suggestions for talking points. Focus on just one or two points, including how NAIS will affect YOU. If you don't know who your legislators are, go to:

Talking points for calls:

NAIS will hurt Arizona's economy:

Neither the USDA nor the state agency has scientific proof show that NAIS will improve disease control:

NAIS is not necessary for the market. Age- and source-verification is already available through the USDA's Process Verified Program

NAIS will not improve food safety

NAIS will not protect against terrorism.

NAIS infringes on people's constitutional rights, including due process, privacy, and religious freedom.

USDA states that NAIS is voluntary at the federal level, so there is no "federal mandate" requiring Arizona to implement this program.
