- Press Releases:
- Michigan Commission of Agriculture Meeting on January 8, 2007
January 3, 2007
- Summary as of 2/22/07
- Under the guise of the tuberculosis program, the
Michigan Department of Agriculture is requiring that all cattle be
identified with an RFID tag as of March 1, 2007. Efforts are
continuing to convince the Governor to step in to stop this program.
At least one legislator has also filed a bill request for a bill to
stop the NAIS.
- Status:
- The Michigan Legislature has not addressed the issue of NAIS. The
Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA) has used the Tuberculosis
program to involuntarily enroll farmers into the premises registration
portion of NAIS. The MDA is also requiring the all cattle have an
RFID tag in their ear by March 1, 2007 in order to be moved anywhere
within the state.
- Grassroots activity:
- People across the state have been actively fighting NAIS! On
December 7, 2006, the Senate Committee on Agriculture held a hearing
which was attended by over 100 people protesting the RFID
requirements. The MDA's meeting on January 8, 2007 was also attended
by over 100 concerned citizens.
- Political Activity:
- Representative Fran Amos is looking into introducing legislation
in the Michigan House of Representatives. We need people to offer
their support to her office, and we need to gain support from other
Representatives for this to pass.
We still need to find a Senator willing to introduce similar
legislation in the Michigan Senate. Keep contacting your local
legislators and let them know their constituents care deeply about
this issue.
The Governor's office is hearing from the opposition, keep it up.
Senator Brater's office has stated that she is looking into the
"possibility" of sponsoring legislation to overturn the March 1st
regulatory deadline.
